Anti Aging: What are Telomeres and Why are they Important?

What is the telomere effect?

Sometimes known as the ‘clocks of aging’, telomeres are the protective caps on DNA in each cell. They are known to be one of the major determinants of aging and longevity in higher mammals, such as humans. Studies have demonstrated a direct correlation between shortened telomere length and aging, life expectancy, DNA damage, and onset of aging-related diseases.

According to an article in The Journals of Gerontology, various genetic and environmental factors such as diet, physical activity, obesity, and stress are known to influence health and longevity as well as telomere dynamics. As telomeres react to positive as well as negative health factors, we should be able to directly influence our telomere metabolism, slow their deterioration, diminish our aging, and perhaps extend our life and health span.

Why do telomeres shorten?

Telomeres are dynamic structures which shorten with each cell division. Quite literally, every time a cell divides, the telomere are shortened just a tiny fraction while performing their role in protecting the actual genetic material being replicated. Once a telomere has shortened to the point that it no longer protects the genetic material, the cell dies. The death of cells contributes to aging, and several studies are underway to explore the role telomeres may play in cancer formation.

Telomeres and Stress

Several meta studies have shown a correlation between stress and shortened telomeres, and a strong link with early life stress and depression. Physical stressors and psychological stressors both play a role in shortening telomere length which reduces their protective properties.

Can telomeres be repaired?

Oxidative stress has also been shown to negatively affect telomere length. But you can take one of the best telomere supplements which delivers powerful antioxidants to provide a protective and restorative effect.

Cell Support, our patented formula is designed to support the body’s antioxidant production and detoxify the lipids within the cells. These two important functions may slow the telomere degradation process and also improve the health of the cell through lipid detoxification.

Our key ingredients include Beta Carotene, Selenium, N-Acetyl-Cysteine and L-Methionine. Working together with your body’s biochemistry, these ingredients support the production of the powerful antioxidant Glutathione Peroxidase to reduce oxidative stress. Learn more about how to take Cell Support here.

In addition, Studies have shown that certain foods lengthen telomeres, including legumes, nut, coffee, seaweed and dairy, as well as 100% fruit juices. Interestingly, this same study showed a detrimental effect on telomeres from the consumption of alcohol, red meat, and processed meat. Additionally, this same study showed a correlation between shortening telomeres and sugar consumption.
